Pikey Hill (4,065 m) is one of the tallest hills of Solu. From Pikey you can see most of the central and eastern Himalayan peaks Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest), Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Annapurna, Gauri Shanker, Lhotse, Numbur, Khatang, Karyalung, Shishapangma, Mera Peak, Thamserku, Lhotseshar, Nuptse and a little of Ama Dablam. The name Pikey is derived from the name of a Sherpa clan deity. During the month of July the locals hold celebrations to worship their clan god, the eastern Chyabo Pikey, as Pikey Hlapchen Karbu.

The name Pikey is derived from the name of a Sherpa clan deity. During the month of July the locals hold celebrations to worship their clan god, the eastern Chyabo Pikey, as Pikey Hlapchen Karbu.

The peak offers breathtaking sunrise and sunset views during good weather. The trail passes through some of the most beautiful settlements of the region. A trail through Jiri-Chaulakharka-Ngaur- leads to the Pikey Danda area. The trail starts at Phaplu and passes through Kerung, Pattale, Jhapre, Pikey peak, Lamajura, Junbesi and ends at Salleri.

 After reaching Pikey we also have the option of taking the Dudhkunda Cultural Trail via Taksindu. The trail passes through Junbesi, Phaplu, Taksindu, Beni, Dudhkunda, Taksindu and back to Salleri. This trek goes through beautiful settlements and landscapes. One of the most beautiful Sherpa villages, Junbesi, is on the way from Pikey to Dudhkunda. One can also visit the famous Thuptenchholing monastery on the way.

The trek can be done May to July and October to early December, though in July it may be best as you'll have a chance to partake in festivities in connection with the worship of Chyabo Pikey. There are two trekking highlights to this trek: summiting Pikey Peak (4070m) and later ascending to Dhud Kund (5400m).

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu International Airport- T I A (1300m) and transfer to hotel.

Day 02: After breakfast we set out for an extensive guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu valley’s cultural, historical, religious and world heritage sites. During the course, we visit the famous Pashupatinath temple of Lord Shiva situated at the holy bank of River Bagmati where we will also observe the Hindu cremation ritual. We then proceed to the Boudhanath stupa, a major pilgrimage centre for the Buddhist faith which also is the largest of its kind in the world. We then have a short break for lunch followed by a visit to Swoyambhunath stupa also known as the Monkey Temple from where we can have a bird’s eye view of whole of Kathmandu valley. Following this we then proceed for a visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square, the oldest royal palace of Kathmandu and a UNESCO world heritage site.  The whole are of Kathmandu Durbar Square is dotted with numerous fascinating Nepalese architect dating back many centuries. The site is also the home to Nepal’s living Goddess – Kumari, where we will also have the opportunity to experience firsthand this unique Nepali tradition.  In the evening we will attend the welcome dinner hosted by Makalu Adventure with live Nepalese culture shows.

 

Day 03: Drive Kathmandu to Jiri [1300m/4264 ft]: 7-8 hrs
Today we take an early morning drive to Jiri, about 187 km north-east of Kathmandu. Since, we would be travelling on mountain road; it takes around 7/8 hrs to reach Jiri. Although still a single lane road, the road condition has improved a lot nowadays than what it used to be until some years ago. Enjoy the views of Koshi River and panoramic views of the eastern Himalaya including Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa while on the drive. Overnight at Jiri.

 

Day 04: Jiri –Bhandar [2220m/7220ft]: 8 hrs
Our trek on the Everest trail begins today. We hike through several scattered villages until Chitre with panoramic views of the Rolwaling Range of mountain in the north. We continue climbing to the pass at 2400 meters, and then descend to Mali Village and after crossing Yelung Khola Stream we reach Doban. We will have more descent, and after crossing the Khimti Khola, we reach Shivalaya. Again after crossing the Chamja Khola stream, we begin a long steep ascent to Sangbadanda. Another steep climb through the rhododendron forests takes us to Deurali and through Mani walls we reach the Sherpa community at Bhandar where some Chhortens and gompas stand.  Overnight at Bhandar.

 

Day 05: Trek crossing Lee Khola to Choulakharaka

Day 06: Trek to Ngaur (3350m)

Day 07: Trek to Pikey Base Camp

Day 08: Climb to summit of Pikey Peak (4070m) - enjoy fine panoramic view of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Baruntse, Thamserku, Karelung, Gangteyga, Lotse, Nuptse, and many other peaks. Back to camp, after bedfast trek down to Lhamije

Day 09: Trek to Japre (3500m); in the evening, visit the Japre monastery

Day 10: Trek through Sherpa summer pastures at Golla to Dhap

Day 11: Trek to Patale - fine trekking day, with lots of nice mountain views

Day 12: Trek to Changsar

Day 13: Hike to Sallery market then trek on to Chiwang Monastery - aka Chiwong Gompa (this monastery is best visited during Mani Rimdu festival in October)

Day 14: Trek to Nyingmapa Thubtencholing Gompa/monastery - founded by Trulshi Rinpoche, one of the biggest monasteries in eastern Nepal, with nearly 700 monks and nuns; Trulshi Rimpoche came to Thubtencholing after escaping from Tibet following Chinese takeover of 1959.

Day 15: Trek to Shengeephuk (5200m); cave, Buddhist pilgrimage site.

Day 16: Trek to Sarshara Beni (3900m).

Day 17: Day hike to Dhudkunda (5400m) and Kala Pokhari (5200m) glacier lakes and trek back to Beni.  

Day 18: Climb to a cairn at 5700m, marvel at Luja glacier, then hike back to Beni.

Day 19: Trek down to Trakshindo Gompa (3000m), another memorable monastery.

Day 20: Trek to Phaplu.

Day 21: Fly back to Kathmandu, rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 22: Sightseeing tour of Bhaktapur and Patan, return to Kathmandu for overnight at hotel.

Day 23: Final departure.
