One of the four main Narayan temples, Ichangu Narayan lies on the far west side of the Valley underneath the mountain of Nagarjun.
It is situated behind Swayambhunath stupa. Merely 11 km and an hour’s drive from the Kathmandu city center, it is known as Narayan of the West. The structure dates back to 5th century and attracts pilgrimages on the full moon day in August.
This two-roofed temple, a one-hour stroll west of the Stupa of Swayambunath in a small side valley, is one of the four most sacred Vishnu shrines in the Kathmandu Valley. It is dedicated to Vishnu in his Narayan incarnation. It is quite possible to continue getting up the small valley among green fields until we get to a pass from where we could continue either further up the ridge to the north or walk down the other side to catch a taxi or a bus back to Kathmandu. This walk is rural Nepal at its best. Built in the two-tiered pagoda style, the temple was founded in around 1200 and its courtyard is dotted with ancient Garuda statues and other Vaishnavite symbols. The surrounding is also a bird watcher’s paradise with almost 40 species of birds making home to this area.
