Departing from the traditional Base Camp itineraries, the monastery and meditation program takes us to the extraordinary world of the Sherpa people in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal and provides the rare opportunity for practicing meditation while taking in the mesmerizing scenery of the region. This trek is different than any other adventure trips into the Everest region with the sole objective of allowing you to marvel at the beauty of the high Himalayas and to devote yourself to the practice of Buddhism – to witness as well as take part in the daily round of meditation.  During the course of this trip we will visit seven more than 250 years of Vajrayana and Mahayana monasteries in the Everest region and participate in the various meditation methods offered in each places.

Practice of peace and compassion while trekking in the Lower Everest Region is a one of a kind experience. During this trek we'll enjoy magnificent views of Mount Everest as well as many of the other highest mountains of the world located in the Eastern Himalaya Ranges of Nepal, such as Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Gaurishanker etc. We will also have many opportunities to interact with the Sherpa people and learn about their way of life, culture and religion. Above all we'll practice meditation, partake in pujas with monks and nuns of the local monasteries, and receive teachings on the Four Noble Truth and other precepts of Buddhism.

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu International Airport- T I A (1300m) and transfer to hotel.

 Day 02: After breakfast we set out for an extensive guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu valley’s cultural, historical, religious and (world heritage) sites. During the course, we visit the famous Pashupatinath temple of Lord Shiva situated at the holy bank of River Bagmati where we will also observe the Hindu cremation ritual. We then proceed to the Boudhanath stupa, a major pilgrimage centre for the Buddhist faith which also is the largest of its kind in the world. We then have a short break for lunch followed by a visit to Swoyambhunath stupa also known as the Monkey Temple from where we can have a bird’s eye view of whole of Kathmandu valley. Following this we then proceed for a visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square, the oldest royal palace of Kathmandu and a UNESCO world heritage site.  The whole are of Kathmandu Durbar Square is dotted with numerous fascinating Nepalese architect dating back many centuries. The site is also the home to Nepal’s living Goddess – Kumari, where we will also have the opportunity to experience firsthand this unique Nepali tradition.  In the evening we will attend the welcome dinner hosted by Makalu Adventure with live Nepalese culture shows.

 

Day 03: Transfer to domestic airport for flight to Phaplu (1900m):

A 35 minute flight from Kathmandu takes you to Phaplu, the gateway to your meditation tour. The trek & meditation team will receive you at the airport. Today you will visit agricultural farm; a Hospital founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, then you'll pray for those who grief with unwanted suffering. Next enjoy viewing Gaurishanker, Karelung & Numbur Himalayas while having lunch. After lunch you will visit Sallery and its local market. Then it is back to campsite to receive the teaching and start your evening meditation. Dinner and overnight will be spent around Phaplu (1900m).

Day 04: Phaplu – Junbesi (2200m), 5-5½ hours:

After breakfast, start the meditation walk towards Junbesi (2675). Today's trail is easy and flat passing through many scenic villages. During the walk you will see Buddhist Stupas and observe local people passing by. Wonderful views of high Himalaya and monasteries while walking through Sherpa villages.  We will stop somewhere in a scenic spot for lunch before arriving to Junbesi campsite sometime later. Before dinner we will practice evening meditation followed by a discourse on:

  • (The Four Noble Truths "the cessation of the causes of suffering")

 

Day 05: Junbesi - Thubten Choling

After breakfast, start walking meditations towards Thubten Choling. Today’s trail will be slightly uphill along Dudh Koshi River. En-route you will visit Thubten Choling Buddhist Monastery which is the biggest monastery in this area. We will stop over for lunch en route, after we walk about 2 hours to reach the camp site. Before dinner we will practice evening meditation followed by a discourse on:

  • (The Four Noble Truths "the path that leads to the cessation of the causes of suffering")

Day 06: Thubten Choling

Early morning we have tea then need to be ready to do Puja with monks and have morning meditations and prayers with over 800 monks and nuns. After lunch, we will have a full day of rest or if you would like you can explore the surrounding on your own or with a guide who shall guide you through. Later in the evening we will take part in the evening Puja followed by questions and answers about Buddhism. Then we have dinner and overnight.

Day 07: Thubten Choling - Singsary hill (4186m), 4 hrs:

After breakfast we will do some walking mediations and start our trek to Singsary.  We will stop for lunch en-route.  During today’s walk, we will enjoy beautiful views, follow jungle route and reach the camp side situated on top of the Singsary hill (4186 m). After some rest we will get ready for meditations and teachings.

Day 08: Singsary hill – Beni, 7-7½. Hours:

We will gather for an early morning group Prayer and then have tea. After breakfast, we start walking towards Beni passing through Jungle and stop for Lunch en-route. After lunch, we continue trekking about 4 hours to reach campsite. After some rest and snacks, we will have a short meditation practice followed by the discourse before joining for dinner and retiring to bed. Overnight in camp around Beni.

Day 09: Beni - Traksindo monastery, 6-7½. Hours:

We will rise up early and join in the morning meditation course before having our breakfast and commencing today’s trek towards Traksindo monastery.  Today’s walk takes us through the jungle on a downhill trail with views of many mountains on the way. We will stop for lunch en-route and have some rest before starting our mid day trek to Trakshindo again.  Dinner and overnight in camp around Trakshindo.

Day 10: Trakshindo - Mera (Sherab Choling monastery):

Early morning meditations followed by breakfast. We then have sometime to, take pictures or visit monastery of the area before starting today’s walking meditation towards Mera (Sherab Choling monastery.) Lunch will be en-route. One we arrive to Mera we have some time for rest and relax before joining the evening warch Dance Program by local women and men. If you'll like to dance, you can definitely join them! The dance music is (1) compassion and wish for the removal of suffering from all living beings, (2) prayer for your longevity and happiness for the rest of your life. After dance we’ll receive teachings from High Guru and have discussion about aspects of spirituality. We will participate in the Evening meditations followed by dinner with local family and overnight in Mera.

Day 11: Mera (Sherab Choling monastery) – Ratnage, 3-7½:

Early morning meditations then join Puja in monastery. After Puja we have Breakfast, take pictures of the area and start walking meditation towards Ratnage. Today you will view many mountains when you reach the top of Ratnage. Lunch en-route. Dinner and overnight in camp around Ratnage. Evening teachings and discussion about the way of life, and small workshop in our camp next day. From Ratnage you will see Merala Mountain, Kanchanganja, Makalu and even Mt. Everest.

Day 12: Ratnage – Chalsa, 4-4½:

After breakfast, if the weather is clear you will see beautiful sunrise reflecting from the mountain. Start walking towards Chalsa. Lunch will be en-route. We will visit Tibetan Refugee Camp, Handicraft Center and Carpet Factory. In the evening we visit Guru Gumba, and meditate in front of Mahakala, the lord of death; if you feel good then you can try peaceful dying meditations with Mahakala. After prayer and meditation we’ll have dinner and overnight in Chalsa.

Day 13: Chalsa - Chiwang monastery, 4 hrs:

After Breakfast, start the walk towards the 245 year old Chiwang monastery. Same day we join evening puja in Chiwang monastery, and have evening meditations and discuss about Buddhism and spirituality, receiving teachings from Lama. Dinner and overnight in Chiwang.

Day 14: Chiwang:

We’ll have a meditation practice on rocky hilltop before breakfast, and then we’ll serve tea and coffee; from here you can enjoy wonderful views of Phaplu and the other mountain villages. After breakfast if you would like to join the monks’ ritual performance you’ll be the most welcome guests. After the ritual performance, we will take you back to the Camp, so if you have any questions or doubt about Buddhist Cosmology again, we will be there for you to solve the problems. Then back to camp, have dinner and overnight in Chiwang.

Day 15: Chiwang – Phaplu, 3-3½ hrs:

Early morning meditation in monastery, back to camp and have breakfast, then peace walk to Phaplu through Sherpa Villages. Lunch will be served once we arrive to Phaplu. In the evening there will be a culture dance Tamang teaching followed by a sort of farewell party before boarding on a flight back to Kathmandu the following morning. Dinner overnight around Phaplu.

Day 16: Phaplu - Fly back to Kathmandu. Rest of the day is at leisure.

 

Day 17:  Guided sightseeing tours of Patan and Bhaktapur Cities, back to Kathmandu.

 

Day 18:  Final departure.
