Ride five spectacular passes through the Indian Himalaya, unparalleled for sheer scale and mountain beauty…….!
Set in India’s western Himalaya, the Trans Himalayan highway connects Manali in Himanchal Pradesh to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, Part of the north-west Himalayan range. At some 600 km long, it does not do things the easy way, scaling five passes culminating with the Tanglang La pass at 5,328 m high. Frequently cited the route as the highest motorable road in the world and involving the crossing of such infamous five high passes, the region in essence is the highest, most remote and least populated in all of India. Cycling through the lush green foothills and descending into beautiful valleys, and entering into the barren, high altitude desert complete with incredible sandstone sculptures are sufficient to remind you of James Hilton’s description of Lost Horizon. The complex ecology of the region is simply the signs of unique Himalayan landscape which changes dramatically over a short distance of riding
This adventure ride starts in the foothills at Manali with its verdant forests. From here the route gets progressively harder and the elevations higher as the ride progresses north over numerous high altitude passes. Tackling the route in this direction offers the best opportunity to fully acclimatize en route and therefore cycle the whole route. The scenery becomes more and more remote until we reach Ladakh, an almost inaccessible region close to the borders of China and Tibet that is home to traditional Tibetan Buddhism. The high point of the trip (quite literally) is cycling over the Khardung La, which at 5602m is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The air is thin here, but there will be no shortage in the sense of achievement!
