Marshyangdi River Rafting

Days from

“Raging River\" in the local dialect aptly describes one of the best whitewater runs in the world.  Only recently opened for commercial rafting (many rapids have not been named yet), the Marshyangdi is one of the next generations of rivers in Nepal, steeper and with a  much more continuous stretch of rapids. The trek is stunning, with great views of the Manaslu and the Annapurnas ahead of you the entire time.  The scenery is breathtaking.

Seasoned rafters consider the Marsyangdi one of the best rafting rivers in the world. Encounters with rapids of class IV – V makes this run and exciting and exhilarating one. To further add to the thrills on this river, there are superb views of the Manaslu and Annapurna massifs throughout the trip.

This is without doubt one of those trips which involve a day’s trek. Rafters are taken on a wonderful adventure, meeting local people in their villages followed by a rafting trip that offers continuous confrontations with bouncing white water rapids. The journey starts with 8 hours drive to Khudi where the short trek begins. Camp is set up at Bulbhule which allows wonderful views of mountains which at sunset look spectacular. Another short hike the next morning, leads to the put in point at Nagdi. The river trip begins after lunch and immediately rapids appeal. Each day brings fresh challenges as the river gets bigger and bouncier, crashing through canyons surrounded by lush green jungle and ends with a spectacular run and scenic float which is good respite from the bumpy ride downstream.

From Ngadi downstream to the end of the trip at Bimalnagar it is solid whitewater.  Rapids are steep, technical, and consecutive, making the Marshyangdi a serious undertaking.  For people looking for a trip with a lot of demanding whitewater and great mountain scenery, the Marshyangdi is hard to beat.

Optional trips:  Royal Chitwan National Park or trekking to Annapurna region or drive back to Kathmandu

Day 01: An early morning departure from Kathmandu takes us on the 172 km to Nagdi where we will set up our river side camp for the night. Bring plenty of snacks and drinks for the long bus ride. In the evening we will get our first look at this river as we sleep on its bank under a star filled sky.

Day 2-4: Three full days to experience this wild and wonderful river. After breakfast on the first day, we will break camp and set up the rafts at which point your guides will issue you with the standard rafting equipment, a paddle, a helmet and a life jacket. The river winds its way along some of the Annapurna Trekking route and is thus well populated with villages. The first rapid we hit is called Instant Karma, but don’t be lulled by its name, it’s a nice warm up for the next rapid “Mamas Big Butt”. So continue the mighty rapids as this rivers plunge, dips and swirls us along its steep path to our take out point. Nights are spent on grassy river banks, eating scrumptious food under the stars and chatting with the locals.

Day 05: After our last night on the river party, we pack up camp with thick heads and head for the bus ride back to Kathmandu where we can sooth aching limbs (and heads) over a cold drink and some good yarns. All told a splendid rafting trip.
