“Helambu” is a short but magnificent hike through the green Tamang and Sherpa region north of Kathmandu with dense forests and extensive terraces. Although the start and end points are close to Kathmandu, this is a quiet route.

The trek begins in Sundarijal, where we climb a ridge above the Kathmandu Valley to our first camp site in Chisopani. On our way to Pati Bhanjyang and on the ridge of Gul Bhanjyang we enjoy endless terraces and great views. Higher, during the steep climb to Kutumsang, we walk through beautiful rhododendron forests. From Ichok we descend to the bottom of the Melamchi Khola valley, and after lunch climb again, to the typical Sherpa village of Tarke Ghyang on the east Helambu ridge.  After a long day trekking through nice villages and beautiful forests we reach Melamchi Pul Bazar, where the bus to Kathmandu is waiting for us.

Day 1: During the bus ride to our starting point in Sundarijal (1270 m) we stop at Bodhnath to see the biggest stupa of Nepal. From Bodhnath we drive about 45 minutes to Sundarijal.

From Sundarijal we climb out of the valley and walk about three hours to the lunch spot. We pass Tamang villages and climb through oak and rhododendron forests. After lunch, we climb just a little, and the day ends with a short descent to Chisopani (chiso = cold, pani = water), where we set up camp.

Day 2: From the hill close to the camp, we have a magnificent view of the snowy peaks of the Himalayas. It is worthwhile to stop here before we descend to the Bhanjyang Pati (1800 m). We walk between the millet and rice terraces. After lunch we climb steeply to the ridge (2470 m). A descent along a large stupa leads to the campsite at the Tamang village Bhanjyang Gul (2130).

Day 3: Today we have today a steep climb through beautiful rhododendron forests (in the spring in full flower) to a more open environment with Sherpa Villages. In Kutumsang (2470 m) we lunch. During the afternoon we walk “up and down” to the camp in Ichok (1800 m), where we have magnificent views of the valley from the Melamchi Khola.

Day 4: We descend three hours into the valley of the Melamchi Khola and cross agricultural areas and forests. We lunch on the banks of the river. Then we begin the gradual climb to the important Sherpa Village Tarke Ghyang (2600 m), where an interesting gompa (Buddhist monastery) can be visited. In this village live many people who have their roots in Tibet.

Day 5: Spare day, Rest, relax and explore on our own.

Day 6: Although this stage is rather long, it is more leveled. We follow the wooded hillside, the separation between the Melamchi Khola and Indrawati Khola. On our route we pass many little villages. We lunch in Shermatang (3 hours, 2600m), which offers magnificent views of the Jugal Himal. After lunch we follow a ridge and descend to our campsite at Khakani.

Day 7: From Khankani we descend through a terrace landscape to Melamchi Pul Bazar (850 m). At Melamchi we cross the river and get on the road where the bus to Kathmandu is waiting for us. The ride takes about three hours.
