The Thimphu Tsechu was established by the 4th temporal ruler, Tenzin Rabgye in 1670 on the 8th month of Bhutanese calendar to commemorate the birth of Guru Rinpoche.

The Thimphu Tsechu was established by the 4th temporal ruler, Tenzin Rabgye in 1670 on the 8th month of Bhutanese calendar to commemorate the birth of Guru Rinpoche. This is one of the most promoted and thus popular festivals in Bhutan in terms of tourist arrivals. The Thimphu Tsechu or Thimphu festival is held in the courtyard of the Tashichho dzong. Since every year number of visitors, both tourist and Bhutanese are increasing very much where all the people can not accommodate in the courtyard and the dance place is being constructed outside where more people can witness and enjoy the Thimphu Tsechu. Most dances in the program have religious significance. Folk dance by the Royal Academy of Performing Arts is interspersed with religious or mask dance.  . Focusing only on the highlights of Paro and Thimphu along with the key festival events in the capital, the Thimphu Tshechu, this festival tour is suitable for those with limited time and content with a short introduction into culture of Bhutan.

  • Day 01: Paro arrival: The flight into Paro on Bhutan’s only national carrier, Druk Air, is a befitting introduction to the spectacular beauty of our country. In clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks, give way to the lush green Paro valley as you land. During the journey, the traveler will experience from the left side of the plane a spectacular view of Mt. Everest, and other famous Himalayan Mountains including the sacred Mt. Jhomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport you will be received by your Bhutanese friend from Makalu Adventure Lunch at the Hotel. Discuss the Tour Programme with the tour guide. Time permitting we will do an afternoon sightseeing of Paro including a visit to Paro Rimpung Dzong, the centre of civil and religious authority in the region.

  • Day 02: Paro – Punakha: Today we will drive to Punakha over Dochula pass. The drive will take about 5 hours. From Dochula pass, we can see the eastern Himalays mountain ranges on clear days. Lunch at Dochula cafeteria followed by a drive to Wangdu Phodrang and Wangdu dzong. On reaching Lobesa, we will hie to Chimmi Lhakhang which is located at a hill top involving a walk about 25 minutes from the main road point. The temple is also known as the temple of fertility.

  • Day 03: Punakha- Thimphu: In the morning we will hike to Khamsum Yule Namgyel Chorten involving 45 minutes steep walk following a visit of Punakha Dzong which had been the winter capital of Bhutan until 1955 when the capital was permanently shifted to Thimphu. The Dzong still serves as the winter resident for the monk body. Drive to Thimphu. Dinner and overnight at Thimphu.

  • Day 04: Thimphu: Full day participation and witnessing of the Thimphu festival (Thimphu Domchoe) followed by a visit to Memorial Chorten and Changangkha Lhakhang. Dinner and overnight at Thimphu.

  • Day 05: Thimphu: Full day participation and witnessing of the Thimphu festival (Thimphu Domchoe) followed by a visit to Drupthop Lhakhang and handicract emporiums. Dinner and overnight at Thimphu.

  • Day 06: Thimphu – Paro: After breakfast, we will drive to Paro. On reachin Paro, we will then hike to the viewpoint of Taktshang (Tiger’s nest) Monastery which involved a steep walk about one and half hour from the main road. The trails to Taktshang climbs through beautiful pine forest, many of the trees festooned with Spanish moss and an occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. After enjoying the view & photograph we have the lunch here before strolling around the Paro town. Dinner and overnight at Paro.

  • Day 07: Final departure: Today we will drive to Paro international airport to catch the flght to your next destination.
