Godavari

Days from

It is an open place with a small village at the foot of Phulchowki Hill. Here, we find a Botanical Garden with orchids in particular and many other Himalayan plants. Rhododendrons adorn the Phulchowki Hill in spring. Hindu pilgrims gather at the sacred festival held every twelve years. Phulchowki Mai is the mother goddess of the forest and a shrine is being erected here in her honour.

Godavari is a rather quiet village, nestling in the southeastern foothills of the Valley. The National Botanical Gardens look a bit of slightly run-down but still a cool, green godsend after a few days in hot and dusty Kathmandu. Not far from the Gardens is Godavari Kunda, a locally revered holy spring, every 12 years (next 2015) the focus of a great mela. Legend has it that this spring is connected to the Godavari river in India. There's also a famous Jesuit school, St Xavier's College which, though not really a gripping sight in itself, is interesting to visit. Godavari is also one of the starting points for the walk up Pulchowki (2762m), the highest peak of the Valley rim.
